The TNEA cut-off is calculated based on the marks obtained by candidates in their qualifying examination (class 12 or equivalent). If there are multiple boards, a normalization process may be used to ensure fairness. A rank list is prepared based on these normalized scores, with higher ranks corresponding to higher scores. Colleges and branches set specific cut-off marks based on the rank list, varying by category (General, SC, ST, OBC). During counselling, candidates choose their preferred colleges and branches based on their ranks, and seats are allocated accordingly. The published cut-offs indicate the minimum scores required for admission to specific colleges and courses, determined by the rank-based allocation process.
